Doing With Less
Why would anybody want to be
a Christian? Why would
anybody want to give up
control over their lives and
trust a power that cannot be
seen or proven?
There’s an old story of a
student who went to a famous
old rabbi and said, “Master,
in the old days there were
people who could see God. Why
is it that nobody sees God
nowadays?” The old man
answered, “My child, nowadays,
nobody can stoop so low”.
Children – especially
four-year-olds – tend to draw
God as a white-haired Grandpa
figure – who may look a lot
like their daddy – or the
pastor. Imagine my glee when
a four-year-old handed me a
picture of God as looking like
a blond, TALL, lady in a long,
white robe with big earrings
and mascara!! Of course
everyone is tall to a
four-year-old – but she was
hearing “God-talk” from her
pastor (me) and associated me
with God. What a
responsibility to know that
she sees me – and all of you
who call yourselves Christian
– as authority figures who
know what God wants us to do!
In our daily lives, we are
always submitting to
authorities. Some of them are
experts. Others have a
charisma that we are forced to
acknowledge as authoritative.
Everyone bows to an external
authority, including those who
say that we should not have
external authority! It is
easier to appeal to Jesus as
an external authority, to
quote him, to cite some verse
or something he said. But
Jesus as the inner authority
means that Jesus must become
one’s companion, one’s
friend. Paul speaks about
CHRIST “dwelling in us.” Paul
tells the Galatians about
Christ “being formed in you.”
The internalization of Jesus
as the authorizing presence is
what we mean by that old word
“sanctification.”
The Hebrew meaning for this
word literally means “space”.
God knows us well enough to
know that when we truly take
God at God’s Word, the result
is freedom. We have enough
space to make decisions that
will allow us to move about in
the world, making differences
in the name and power of God
as we walk as disciples with
Christ. Often, those are
small things….helping a friend
in trouble, taking in a child
who needs a safe place to stay
for a while, feeding someone
who is hungry, loving someone
who needs to know that someone
who might not even know them
can care enough to reach out.
When two of the disciples ask
Jesus where they will sit in
Heaven, (Mark 10:35ff), and
have the audacity to ask that
be placed where they perceive
to be the “places of power,”
Jesus answers them by asking
another question…Jesus does
that a lot…and asks if they
are able to drink the cup that
He must drink. That cup meant
dying to everything we hold as
dear to this life. That cup
meant making ourselves open to
serving those who need to know
the love of Christ in their
lives. That cup meant
“getting small” as we lift
others up. Why would anybody
want to be a Christian?
Because our lives become
absolutely necessary and life
has meaning beyond what the
world can see without us.
That is the gift of
salvation. Our actions
through the power of the Holy
Spirit help make God visible
to the world. Talk about
powerful! God bless you on
your journey with Jesus.

Lutheran Memorial Board of
Trustees
Meeting Minutes of
May 6, 2008
Present: , Bob Lowry, Carolyn
Hofer, Linda Zeller, Gary
Palmer, Dave Luers, Janet
Haraldson, Tami Darnall,
Marlene Knudtson, Terry
Kvislen Sharon Tisher, Pastor
Andrea
Absent: Brett Koenecke
The meeting was called to
order at 6:02 PM.
1.
Conference Room has been
painted.
Cost $53 for paint, Labor was
donated.
2.
Insurance Audit Refund.
The Insurance Audit refund of
$221 from the 2007 paid
premium has been deposited
back into the Worker’s Comp
budget line in General Fund.
A premium based for a full
year is paid and when the
policy is not fully used, a
refund is issued
3.
March General Fund Ending
Balance.
Ending balance for General
Fund in March should have been
$13,100.22 instead of the
$19,369.88 that was reported
at the April 1, 2008 Trustee
meeting. The twice-entered
deposit error was found by
Marlene and corrected when the
checking account was
reconciled. For May, we are
currently sitting at
5,589.50. With summer time
arriving and lower attendance,
we will need to watch our
spending.
4.
Kalwall Restoration.
We received a letter from
SpecPro on April 24, 2008 in
reference to the Kalwall
restoration. SpecPro is urging
us to take care of the Kalwall.
At the May Trustee meeting we
noted that Bruce Keller from
Kalwall Manufacturing said
that we have three choices–do
nothing (not recommended),
restore with SpecPro (they
have lots of experience), or
replace panels. Is there any
new information? At this
time, we are going to put this
on hold and use the funds from
125th anniversary
celebration to fix this.
5.
KARR Tuckpointing.
We are still waiting for a
proposal for the masonry work
from the KARR offices. There
are a couple places that do
need some caulking around the
church.
6.
Computers.
Initial computer work has been
done by Dakota 2000. The cost
remains at $1900. They have
not billed us yet because they
have some work left to do.
Computers are working much
better.
7.
WEB page is available. Dakota 2000 is still making improvements. Office
staff will soon take over
adding/changing information on
it. The cost remains at $810
for the
WEB development plus $19.95 per month hereafter for
WEB housing. The website is
up and running with updates
still to come.
8.
Deterioration of rear entry
door.
The rear door does have metal
coming off of it as well as
blistering. It was also
noticed that the window next
to it was also noticed to need
repair. One quote was
submitted. It was decided
another quote was needed.
This topic was tabled until
next month.
9.

Business
With the
shortage of income, there was
discussion of mission moments
for the next couples of
services. Carolyn Hofer
volunteered to find a couple
people to do the mission
moments.
Space
Utilization Considerations
Dave
Luers discussed the items
again with the members
present.
A lot of
the items on the list have no
cost associated with them.
Some of
the larger items will take
some money, time, and labor.
Dave
suggested getting various
groups together to do the walk
through to see if the groups
would be OK with relocating
their equipment and
belongings. Dave, Tami, Terry
and Gary have volunteered to
do a walk through of the
church and establish a
“relocating” plan for the
committee members to review.
The church office will contact
the various committees for the
Trustees. This group will get
together on May 21 to do the
walk through. .

125th
Anniversary Update
As you
already know, Lutheran
Memorial is celebrating 125
years of ministry in the
Pierre/Fort Pierre area and a
committee of volunteers is
busy planning events to
commemorate the occasion.
This bulletin is to keep you
informed of what’s happening
and to ask you to find a way
to get involved in the
celebration. Every
celebration needs a motto and
ours is “By Grace
Alone”. You will see
this in the coming months in
newsletters, on bulletins and
soon on a new banner over the
front doors of our church.
The 125th
Anniversary Planning Committee
has several sub-committees.
Listed below are the
committees and those
individuals who have
volunteered to serve as
chairs.
- Jane
Naylor is Chair of the
History Committee. We have
found numerous old
directories and documents
detailing the church
history; however, if you
have additional material or
pictures that you are
willing to loan, please
contact Jane at 224-5107..
- Clyde
Jundt is Chair of the
Projects Committee. These
projects will be discussed
in detail in later issues of
the newsletter; however, a
sampling would be
maintenance projects around
the church structure, a
mission project, a Lutheran
Habitat build, media
upgrades and more.
- Lon
Kightlinger is Chair of the
Mission Committee. The
group has a strong desire to
do an international mission
project and Lon is working
to find just the right
project.
- Jeff
Bloomberg is Chair of the
Worship& Music Committee.
Jeff is working on our first
special worship service, set
for Sunday, June 22nd
on the Capital grounds.
- Andrea
Clarke is Chair of the Kids
Committee. Andrea has some
fun activities planned for
the kids at our special
worship services, especially
on June 22nd.
- Elayne
Lande is Chair of the Food
Committee. There will be an
old fashioned Lutheran
potluck following the June
22nd worship
service.
- Pat
Clark is Chair of the
Decorating Committee. If
you are interested in
helping in this activity,
please call Pat at 224-1367.
- Gill
Hedman is Chair of Outdoor
Maintenance. Gill can
always use help so please
call him at 224-6927.
- Esther
Schlueter is Chair of the
Guest Pastors Committee.
Esther will be busy as we
have a number of former
pastors coming back to visit
the congregation. It
promises to be a fun
celebration as we renew old
acquaintances and continue
the work of spreading the
Good News!
- Brett
Koenecke is Chair of the
Fundraising Committee. We
would like to raise $125,000
to put toward projects
around the church as well as
our global mission work.
Our
first big event will be held
on June 22nd with a
10:00 a.m. worship service on
the Capitol grounds followed
by a pot luck dinner in
Fellowship Hall. Former
Pastor Fred Rosin will be the
guest speaker and we look
forward to hearing from Pastor
Fred. Please bring your
favorite lawn chair or blanket
and plan to worship with us
near the Visitors Center. In
case of inclement weather, the
service will be held in the
church.
Lastly, in an effort to help
our members “go green”
the Committee will be selling
bags with the “By Grace
Alone” logo for $5.00
each. Watch for the bags to
go on sale in the next couple
of weeks.
If you have any questions
please feel free to contact
Max Gors, Barb Bjorneberg,
Mary Ness or Chuck Schlueter.
We hope to see you at the June
22nd celebration
and be watching for future
bulletins on upcoming events.

LMC 125th
Anniversary Projects
The "Projects Committee" is
looking to identify projects
that will enhance our church
facilities and their operation
in the future. There are
maintenance type projects such
as tuck-pointing our older
brickwork, and refurbishing
our Kal-Wall that need to be
done. Some feel we should plan
on purchasing new hymnals.
Others suggest upgrading our
media equipment. Do we need
new choir robes? Does the
Nursery have needs? Do you
have suggestions that would
make some task easier or
better if done another way? Is
there something that is not
being done that you feel
should be? The committee
requests that you put your
suggestions in writing,
addressed to the "Projects
Committee" and put them in the
offering plate or deliver them
to the Church office by July
1. The committee will review
all suggestions, determine
what each project amounts to
and what it costs, and
prioritize the list. The
Projects list will then be
submitted to the Church
council for their
consideration.

We all have busy lives

Meanwhile, the church expenses

Thanks to everyone who
advertised and shopped at
the 4th Annual Plants
Plus! Master Gardener
sale. To quote one of our
members, it was "wildly
successful". Our profits
will be used to fund
improvements to the gazebo
and signage at the
Arboretum, supplies for
4-H workshops and
presentations, development
of a xeric demonstration
flower bed by the softball
fields, plus maintenance
and plantings at the Tower
Garden (corner of
Pleasant/Pierre) and
Steamboat Garden
(Popular/Dakota)
We are always looking
for planting containers -
recycling pots from the
greenhouses. If you have
some you were going to
throw away, I will gladly
take them home and store
for next year's sale.
Thanks again ~ Tracy.
